My Perspective From 20 Years in Property
By Lindsay French, Agency Partner.
Having worked in estate agency for more than two decades, one question I’m often asked is: “What makes a successful agency team?” For me, the answer has always been rooted in people. Yes, market knowledge, negotiation skills and experience are essential, but true success comes from how well you listen, understand and communicate.
I started my career long before digital systems and automated processes. Back then, much of the job took place face‑to‑face, with handwritten notes and conversations across kitchen tables. The tools may have evolved, but the heart of agency work hasn’t changed. Listening remains the foundation of accurate valuations, trusted advice and long‑term relationships.
One of the greatest strengths of our Agency team is our connection to the region. Many of us grew up here, built our careers here, or returned home later because we believe in this part of the country and its communities. That understanding of local streets, schools, trends and neighbourhood nuances can’t be taught – it’s lived.
When a client asks, “What’s the market doing in my area?” we don’t rely solely on data. We combine real‑time insight with decades of on‑the‑ground experience. It’s this combined professional expertise and genuine regional pride that helps us guide clients with confidence.
Estate agency can sometimes be associated with competition, but that’s not how we operate at GFW. We’ve built a culture of collaboration, where knowledge is shared openly and challenges are tackled together.
If one of us is handling a complex sale or navigating a delicate negotiation, the whole team is ready to step in with support or advice. This collective approach means every client benefits from the full depth of our team’s expertise, not just the experience of a single agent. It also creates a positive working environment where ideas flow freely and success is shared.
Property markets shift constantly, influenced by economic changes, buyer behaviour and local demand. One of the things that sets our team apart is our commitment to staying ahead of those shifts. We don’t rely on what worked five years ago, or even last year. Instead, we continually refine our approach, embrace new tools, analyse emerging trends and adapt quickly. Our proactive approach ensures clients always receive strategic, up‑to‑date advice grounded in real market knowledge, not guesswork or outdated assumptions.
Above everything else, what makes our team exceptional is that we care – deeply. We care about accuracy, communication, fairness and doing right by every client who trusts us with their home or investment. Property decisions are significant and often emotional, and we never take that responsibility lightly.
After twenty years in this industry, I can say with certainty that the strength of an agency lies not in its processes or technology, but in its people. And at GFW, I’m proud to work alongside some of the very best.
