Project Overview

The A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project is one of the UK’s largest infrastructure upgrades, involving over 50 miles of road improvements between the M6 at Penrith and the A1(M) at Scotch Corner. The scheme includes the conversion of remaining single carriageway sections to dual carriageway, along with junction improvements and access reconfigurations. Delivered via Development Consent Order, the project significantly impacts landowners along the route.

Our Role

GFW has been appointed by private landowners impacted by the scheme to provide full lifecycle support, from early-stage consultation through to post-construction compensation claims. Our involvement ensures that the interests of affected landowners are fully represented and compensated under the DCO process.

Scope of Services Provided

  • Early Engagement & Strategic Input
    Initiating early dialogue with National Highways to influence route alignment and exploring mitigation measures that reduce impact on our client’s property and operations.
  • Mitigation Advice
    Delivering tactical guidance on the most appropriate mitigation strategies, tailored to the client’s specific land use and business activities.
  • Survey Access Management
    Managing access agreements for both intrusive and non-intrusive surveys, ensuring landowner rights are protected and appropriate terms are agreed.
  • Scheme Design Negotiation
    Engaging in detailed negotiations regarding the final route design to address concerns such as severance, access alterations, and environmental impacts.
  • Early Entry Agreements
    Negotiating terms for early entry by contractors where necessary, ensuring compensation and safeguards are in place.
  • Compensation Valuation & Claims
    Preparing robust valuation assessments and submitting claims for:
    • Permanent land take
    • Injurious affection
    • Severance
    • Disturbance and business losses
  • Post-Construction Monitoring
    Continued client support post-construction, monitoring ongoing impacts and ensuring all agreed payments and remedial actions are fulfilled.
