Developers that fail to deliver new homes to face penalties according to latest Government planning reforms.

In an announcement made late last week, the government has stated that councils are to be given new powers to speed up the delivery of new homes. Developers that fail to deliver new homes within an agreed timeframe could see a ‘delayed homes penalty’ issued per unbuilt unit, which reportedly is to be paid directly to local planning authorities.

The housing secretary and deputy prime minister has said that these new powers offer the potential to deliver ‘thousands’ of homes in a bid to ‘get Britain building again after years of inaction.’ According to a government white paper on the reforms, the penalty would apply when developers of schemes over 50 units fall 10 per cent or more behind a build-out schedule agreed during the planning process.

Speaking on the subject, Angela Raynor said:

“It’s time for developers to roll up their sleeves and play their part. We’re going even further to get the homes we need. No more sites with planning permission gathering dust for decades while a generation struggle to get on the housing ladder.’’

Past Governments have attempted to achieve the same end by many means over the years; could this be the year they succeed?
