Grant funding for improvements to hedgerows and boundaries.

With the new scheme offerings available and the potential for options under the extended Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) to improve grassland and incentivise incorporating livestock as part of the management of the arable rotation, many farmers are considering if their boundaries are up to scratch.

Through the Countryside Stewardship Standalone Capital Grant Scheme funding is available for fencing and hedge works. Key options available for funding include:

  1. FG1: fencing (2 strands of plain steel or barbed wire) – £6.34/ metre
  2. FG2: sheep netting (mesh wire and a single strand of plain or barbed wire if required) – £7.47/ metre
  3. FG12: wooden field gate – £489.90/ metre
  4. BN7: hedgerow gapping-up – £17.22/ metre
  5. BN11: planting new hedges – £22.97/ metre
  6. BN6: coppicing – £5.33/ metre
  7. BN12: stone wall restoration – £31.91/metre
  8. BN13: Top wiring – stone wall £5.54/metre. Applicable on walls rebuilt with BN12

Fencing is funded to protect environmental features i.e. woodlands, existing or newly planted hedges, to protect stone walls, or to prevent soil erosion.

Gapping up hedges (BN7) is eligible where there are gaps in existing hedges of up to 5m wide; planting new hedges (BN11) is for gaps over 5m wide, or to plant new hedges along a boundary such as extending an existing hedge. With a boundary restoration item such as BN7 or BN11 you are also eligible to apply for FG12. The fencing is also eligible with metal posts as opposed to wooden posts.
